These are some of my favorite places
on the web:
The United States Institute for Theater
Technology
The USITT calls itself "the Association of Design, Production and
Technology Professionals in the Performing Arts" and is the
organization that originated the DMX-512 protocol.
The Entertainment Services and Technology
Association
ESTA is a non-profit trade association representing the North American
entertainment technology industry. Control of the DMX-512
specification has been passed to ESTA.
The Professional Lighting and
Sound Association
PLASA is the UK's leading association for the industry, their
equivalent of ESTA in the United States.
Delphi Forums
One of the most useful sources of information I've found is a Delphi
Forum called The Light Network, a discussion board frequented by some
pretty high-powered lighting people around the world.
Controlbooth.com
is a forum aimed specifically at the high-school and college
theater-technology student. Lighting is only a small, but
important, part of this much larger forum. There are a few pretty
knowledgeable professionals
who visit these boards from time-to-time, and enjoy helping newcomers
who are interested in the profession.
